We are excited to unveil the Q3 2024 update of the Global Crypto Classification Standard (GCCS), developed in collaboration with CoinGecko and 21Shares. This latest version continues to serve as a comprehensive industry taxonomy, helping to clarify the complexities of the crypto landscape and guiding investors and enthusiasts through its evolution.
Our goal with this update is to refine and expand the classification to accommodate the rapid developments within the crypto sector. Below are the key modifications introduced in this version:
LEVEL 1 – The Crypto Stack
- Terminology Updates: We have updated a key term to enhance clarity and consistency. The term "Scaling Platforms" has been refined to "Blockchain Accelerators." This adjustment aims to align terminology across different layers of the crypto stack, making it more intuitive and reflective of the sector's ongoing growth.
LEVEL 2 – Market Mapping by Sectors and Industries
- Sector Reclassification: We have merged and rebranded the "Media and Entertainment" sector into a broader category called "Social and Gaming," which now better encompasses the growing intersection between blockchain, gaming, and social platforms.
- New Sector: AI and Data Solutions: To highlight the increasing confluence of artificial intelligence in the crypto space, we have introduced the "AI and Data Solutions" sector. This sector includes newly defined industries and industries previously categorized under IT Services, emphasizing the critical role that AI and data play in the crypto ecosystem.
- New Sector: DePIN: We have also added a new sector called "DePIN," which stands for Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks. This sector includes a range of industries focused on decentralizing and tokenizing real-world physical infrastructure, enhancing the way individuals and businesses interact with existing systems.

This latest iteration of the GCCS reflects our commitment to keeping pace with the fast-moving crypto industry, providing a clear and comprehensive guide to understanding the diverse assets that comprise this space. As we continue to refine and enhance these standards, we hope that the GCCS will remain a vital tool for all who seek to understand the crypto market's complexities.
